Borough Market, London

Borough Market, London

On a recent trip to London, I was told that I should make a special trip to Borough Market, Britain’s most renowned food market. I didn’t know what to expect. I thought that it is just a food market, but came to find out that it is so much more.

Borough Market has been around for more than 1,000 years. It is located at the end of London Bridge and started as a trading place right where the bridge was built. It grew into a medieval market then on to a wholesale market. Now it hosts exceptional produce sellers. Many of the sellers are themselves farmers. The fishmonger caught the fish. The baker baked the bread. There is a bakery that is a school for bakers where locals can also sign up to take classes. In addition you will find purveyors of fine foods, spices, olives, cheese, salumi… the list is long.

In addition to all the stalls, you will also find different street food vendors and if you happen to come by during lunch hour, the entire area is crawling with people hurrying to buy their lunch and eat it on one of the benches before returning to their jobs.

The architecture of Borough Market ranges from Victorian to Art Deco. It is centrally located London and also provides an ideal location for a unique venue for special occasions. It is easily accessible by the London Tube (Metro) and by taxi. Borough Market is definitely worth a visit!
